WoW Forever Mounts: Riding Tiers, Costs and Every Source

Forever puts your first mount at level 40 and the fast one at 60, and the gold goes to a riding trainer instead of a stable. Here is what each tier costs and how fast it runs, where every race learns to ride, how paladins and warlocks get theirs, and which mounts take reputation, rank or luck rather than coin.

The short version

  • You can ride at level 40. Apprentice Riding costs 100 gold, makes you 60% faster than on foot, and comes with a mount.
  • Journeyman Riding opens at level 60, costs 1,000 gold and raises the bonus to 100%.
  • There is no flying in Forever at any level. Everything below is a ground mount.
  • Mounts you collect are shared across your account, with a one-way rule for Hardcore.
  • Some of the most wanted mounts have no gold price at all: they come from reputation, PvP rank, the Legacy track or a rare drop.

Figures come from Blizzard's developers and Wowhead's Forever database, patch 1.60.1. Where nothing is published, we say so.

Designers Michael Nuthals and Kris Zierhut gave both fees in a Sportskeeda interview on September 18, 2026, and the 2 riding spells in Wowhead's Forever database carry the same training cost. The same answer settled the detail that softens the bill: once you have paid for the training, your first mount is free. Their reasons were short. A pricey mount gives your gold something to aim at, and the economy is healthier when gold has places to leave the world for good.

Extra colors and swift versions

The free mount is one animal. Any other color comes from the vendor next to your trainer. Warcraft Tavern's riding guide puts an extra normal mount at 20 gold and an extra swift one at 200, and the Skyborne Galestriders carry exactly those prices in the database. These are looks, not upgrades.

Ways to pay less

  • Honored with your home faction takes 10% off both training and mounts, according to Warcraft Tavern. On Journeyman Riding that is 100 gold back.
  • Bartering, a Legacy Tree perk, cuts the gold price of items from all vendors by 10%. Its tooltip names vendors only, so count on it for mounts you buy, not for the trainer's fee.
  • Diplomat, another Legacy perk, speeds up reputation gains by up to 10% at full rank. It matters most for the Exalted mounts further down this page.

What is different from 2004

In the original game the trainer was the small part of the bill. Wowhead's Classic guide puts riding training at 20 gold before discounts, with the animal paid for separately at a vendor, and most epic mounts at 1,000 gold before discounts. Forever flips that around, as Burning Crusade once did. Blizzard's Deep Dive recap says the up-front mount cost moves into training, and a mount is granted when you learn to ride.

A few more changes shape how you collect:

  • One riding skill for all. Classic taught Horse Riding, Ram Riding and the rest as separate skills. In Forever, Apprentice Riding is a new spell that covers every family, from wolves and kodos to the new Galestriders.
  • Mounts belong to the account. Every mount item in the Forever database is tagged account-wide, and Blizzard says collections are shared across rulesets. Hardcore is the exception: rewards earned there carry over to the other rulesets, but nothing comes back in. Our Hardcore page covers the rest of that ruleset.
  • No flying, ever. Blizzard lists "no flying mounts" among Forever's guiding principles. The closest thing is Frequent Flier, a Legacy perk that makes flight paths 50% cheaper and 20% faster.
  • A speed top-up at 60. Gift of Galloping costs 150 gold from Mister Graphed, the Agent of the Black Market, and adds 10% mounted speed for 360 hours. The timer keeps running while you are logged out.
  • One race rides a little faster. In Forever the Tauren racial Plainsrunning adds 3% speed while mounted, on top of its bonus on foot.

Confirmed

  • Both training fees, mount included
  • Level 40 and 60 on mounts in the database
  • Account-wide mounts, no flying

Not announced

  • Which mount the trainer gives you
  • Whether the riding skill is shared between characters
  • Whether a class mount quest also covers the training fee

Racial mounts and where to train

Each race has a trainer and a mount vendor standing a few steps apart. You train and shop at your own race's stable; another race's stable opens to you only at Exalted with that race.

Humans get a second horse vendor, Unger Statforth, in Menethil Harbor in the Wetlands. Riding is still trained in Elwynn Forest.

Galestriders, the Skyborne birds

The Skyborne are Forever's new race, and they ride Galestriders, running birds in Umber, Stormy and Empyrean colors. Each color also comes as an armored swift version for level 60. High Order Skyborne fight for the Alliance and Windshapers for the Horde, yet both buy from the same man: Genn Fairweather, stablemaster and riding trainer in one. A Regal Galestrider and its swift version are in the data too, with no seller attached yet.

There is one catch. The Skyborne race and Zephras Isle come with the Skyborne Heroic Pack, so without it the stable is out of reach.

Recolors from later expansions

The Striped Dawnsaber, Black Skeletal Horse, Ochre Skeletal Warhorse and White Kodo first appeared years after 2004. Warcraft Tavern and the collectors' guide on Wowhead put them on the race vendors, while Wowhead's own mount guide still marks their source as unknown.

Paladin and warlock mounts

2 classes skip the stable. As in the original game, their mounts come from class quests.

  • Paladin: Summon Warhorse at level 40 and Summon Charger at 60. Forever adds Forsaken paladins, and they get a pair of their own, ending in the Forsaken Charger. Blizzard showed both at its BlizzCon lore panel and promised quests with a "retribution" theme.
  • Warlock: Summon Felsteed at 40 from Strahad Farsan in Ratchet, a quest Wowhead lists as unchanged from Classic, and Summon Dreadsteed at 60.

The open question is gold. Warcraft Tavern writes that paladins and warlocks learn to ride through these quests rather than at a trainer. Blizzard has not said so in writing, and a thread on the official Forever forum opened on October 2 asked exactly this without a Blizzard reply. Wowhead's Classic guide also notes the class mount quests carry costs of their own, so a waived fee would not make the epic free.

Rolling a paladin or warlock?

Save the 100 and the 1,000 anyway. If the quest covers the training, the gold goes to the quest or a second mount; if not, you are not stuck on foot at 60.

Rare and prestige mounts

Past the stable, mounts are earned through reputation, rank, account progress, a drop or a store pack. Gold reaches only some of them.

Reputation: the Frostsaber and the Pack Kodo

The Winterspring Frostsaber is the long grind it always was: repeatable turn-ins worth 50 reputation each, with more unlocking as you climb toward Exalted, so the collectors' guide on Wowhead advises taking Diplomat first. After that, 1,125 gold buys it, which makes it one of the few top-end mounts gold reaches at all.

The Pack Kodo is the reverse: 6,000 Merchant's Favor, earned by filling Waylaid Crates found around the world and turning them in to the Azeroth Commerce Authority in Redridge or to Durotar Supply and Logistics at the Crossroads. It also gives the Alliance a kodo, a mount that in 2004 belonged to the Horde alone.

PvP: Rank 11 and Alterac Valley

Forever brings back the old 14-rank honor ladder. Rank 11 unlocks the Black War mounts from the rank vendor in Stormwind or Orgrimmar. A weekly cap on Rank Points keeps anyone from sprinting there, and the rankings are expected to reset every few months.

Drops, Legacy and the store

The collectors' guide expects Deathcharger's Reins from Baron Rivendare in Stratholme, still a level 58 to 60 dungeon in Forever, at a very low drop chance; the database has no recorded drop yet. The Spectral Bear waits at 55 Legacy Points, which come from one-time challenges such as leveling different classes and professions and count for your whole account. Neither store mount replaces training: Blizzard says outright that the Prideclaw needs the riding skill bought in game.

Mounts with no source yet

Dataminers have found more mounts than anyone can explain so far. Read this list as models in a file, not as a promise.

In the files, no source

  • Swift Razzashi Raptor and Swift Zulian Tiger
  • 5 Qiraji Resonating Crystals
  • Riding Turtle
  • Lavender Kodo, Dark Skeletal Horse, Golden Sabercat

Encrypted, not announced

  • Swift Hyjal Stag and Caravan Kodo
  • Warden Sabers in 4 colors
  • Devilsaurs in 5 colors
  • Druid Moose in 4 colors

The raptor, the tiger and the crystals belonged to Zul'Gurub and Ahn'Qiraj, and neither raid is on Forever's launch schedule. The first raids, Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit and Onyxia's Lair, open on December 9 with no mount named. A Swift Hyjal Stag invites a link to Hyjal Summit, but nothing official connects the two.

Budgeting for riding

Everything a character can spend on mounts in gold, at list price:

WhatGoldWhen
Apprentice Riding, mount included100Level 40
Journeyman Riding, swift mount included1,000Level 60
Extra normal color20Level 40, optional
Extra swift color200Level 60, optional
Gift of Galloping150Every 360 hours, optional
Winterspring Frostsaber1,125Exalted, level 60

The 2 tiers together come to 1,100 gold per character before the Honored discount. The first tier is a modest goal for the climb to 40. The second is the first big savings target most characters will have, so it pays to start putting gold aside well before 60. Collections are shared but nothing says the training is, so if you plan several characters, count the fee for each one.

Most players will earn it. Our gold farming guide walks through where Forever gold comes from at each stage of leveling, and if you level a gathering profession on the way, the professions guide covers which pairs work. If you would rather not farm all of it, gold can also be bought: the ladder lists the offers we track, cheapest coin first.

Questions

What level do you get a mount in WoW Forever?

Level 40, when Apprentice Riding opens and the trainer hands you a mount with the lesson. Journeyman Riding and the swift mounts follow at 60. Paladins and warlocks reach their class mounts at the same 2 levels.

How much gold does an epic mount cost in Forever?

1,000 gold for Journeyman Riding, swift mount included. Each extra swift color is 200 gold more, and Honored with your home faction takes 10% off both.

Are there flying mounts in WoW Forever?

No. Blizzard ruled flying out as one of Forever's founding principles. Flight paths still run, and the Frequent Flier perk makes them cheaper and faster.

Are mounts account-wide in Forever?

Yes, across every ruleset except that Hardcore only shares outward. Whether the riding skill is shared too has not been said, so budget training for each character.

Does a store mount let me skip riding training?

No. Blizzard says the Cerulean Prideclaw still needs the riding skill bought in game, and the Loyal Companion bear needs Apprentice Riding as well.

Which mounts can gold not buy?

The Pack Kodo (Merchant's Favor), the Spectral Bear (Legacy Points), the Deathcharger (a drop), the Black War mounts (PvP Rank 11) and the 2 store mounts. Gold covers riding, the stable colors, the Frostsaber after Exalted and the speed top-up.
