Dying does not burn the gold
At the BlizzCon Deep Dive Blizzard said that once Hardcore is live, a character that dies can move to another play style: Normal or PvP. It keeps what it carries on the way out.
So coin bought for a Hardcore run is not lost to one bad pull. It carries on with the character in whichever world you take it to.
What is still not announced
Whether a character that left Hardcore can ever come back, whether the move costs anything, and the exact date beyond “winter”.

Hardcore gold, answered
When does Hardcore open on the live game?
After launch. Forever opens on November 4 with Normal, PvP and Roleplay, and Blizzard has said Hardcore follows this winter without naming a day.
If my Hardcore character dies, is the gold gone?
No. The character can move to Normal or PvP and takes its gold along. The run ends; the balance does not.
What is Hardcore gold spent on?
Staying alive. Healing potions, better armor, bags so you are never stranded with a full inventory. Players on one life buy safety first.
